What Is Twitter?
Wherever I go there's always a number of people asking me "What is Twitter, I don't see the use for it, why should I bother?" and most importantly, why are there all these social media gurus telling me that I must use it?
I hope that in this section of the site I'll be able to give you an insight into Twitter, how to use it and also review some of the Twitter tools that are springing up out there claiming that they can save you time and boost your profile.
Twitter is a platform for communicating in public. From a business perspective it's an opportunity to build relationships with your customers and suppliers alike and also to network and find new areas for business. Because you're Tweets are in the public domain, anyone and everyone can see them and sure enough someone will pick up on what you are saying, respond and snap, there starts the conversation.
This is the big difference and probably the least understood part of Twitter. You are not Tweeting into and black hole, you are actively getting involved in two way communications that allow you to build relationships.
It's amazing how quickly you can build up new relationships but like all networking relationships there's work required to build up that trust and that comes through exchanging Tweets. As your new relationships start to blossom, so you create the opportunity to build your contacts for business.
A great way to build your business is to connect with people who are in the same geographic region as you and / or where your business operates, this allows you to be extremely targeted in your business social media marketing campaigns and there are software tools out there that can help build your following this way.
Twitter only allows communication in 140 characters or less, this means that you have to be punchy with your communication and certainly it helps focus the mind on what you are trying to say.
